Kitchen separation box - great way to reduce landfill waste

I'm super excited to be able to recycle all of the items that I can't put through standard town and city recycling programs - like teabag packaging, coffee bean packaging, snack wrappers, and water filters, to name a few. I just got the small kitchen separation zero waste box in the mail via UPS. It arrived quickly in a soft mailer which you can recycle through many local/major grocery or retail stores. Just cut off the label section first and you can recycle the majority of the mailer. I'll keep everyone posted here how long it takes me to fill the small kitchen separation zero waste box. The small box works nice because I can hide it in the kitchen inside a lower cabinet. The box is really nice quality and lists what is acceptable clearly on the side. I'm excited to also see zero waste box options for shoes and textiles (separate options). Those might be my next selection. Thanks Terracycle!

Love this box for the plastic food packaging we can't avoid.

(I chose and purchased Small, but this review keeps popping up as Large) We have a local store that recycles grocery bags (which we don't use but often get from someone else) and other #4 bags. What they don't take is all of the other plastic packaging from food. I have been saving these for over a year now - we had a bunch more when our kids were back for the summer last year! Based solely on price, I got the Small, and thought I may have some left over to start saving for the next box, but not only did everything fit in the small box, it's only 2/3 full! While I still prefer to avoid the packaging to begin with, it's not always possible. I'm so happy that this will no longer go into the landfill to outlive us! I am sad that it arrives wrapped in plastic, but it's not extra plastic packaging from Terra, it's the USPS mailing bag. Those can be recycled at the local store that recycles bags, or they are a great size and can be reused for other mailing. While it would be awesome if these boxes could be picked up at a local store or location without extra packaging, the #4 mailer is probably the least awful way of getting it from Terra to us. I will be a repeat customer <3

Super helpful reducing our household waste

Came across Terracycle because we eat Late July chips. It took a moment to fully understand how to navigate the website and the plethora of box options. For our needs, we determined the Kitchen Zero Waste Box serves us best. With no reference point regarding how long it would take to fill the first box, prior to placing the order, we diverted items from the trash to see how long it would take to fill a box of equal dimensions as the smallest option. Ours is a two adult, three, medium to large, dog household that hosts family and friends for 4-8 weeks each year. We expect to fill 2 or 3 largest size boxes per year. The Terracycle guide with what can go into the box is very general; causing us to use best judgement regarding what to include. Some tips: if an item is too greasy or soiled, it gets washed and air dried before depositing it into the box; in order to maximize on space, we keep a 50lb dumbbell inside the box to compress the volume as much as possible. Our first box we returned weighted 40-ish pounds. We opted to drop off the box at a UPS store while out doing other errands…but could’ve arranged a home pickup instead; which we’ll do here forward. Once our compost bins are set-up, we hope to discontinue the subscription waste services and haul recyclables ourselves once a month or so. Then the box expense is offset. While we won’t be zero waste, it gets us some steps closer. Thank you Terracycle!

Highly Recommend

TerraCycle not only responsible recycles our products, but it also highlights the true cost of our trash. The box is easy to put together and fits perfectly in our home. I cannot recommend this enough! In addition to our compost, this has helped us go down to less than one bag of trash a week. One small step to be a steward of our environment.

By the way

How is "fabric and clothing" a kitchen separation item? It makes we wonder what else I can put in my boxes. The method of ordering, receiving the box is easy, tho expensive. Worth it.
