Love what Terracycle is doing but the cost involved is prohibitive
I'm so excited for what Terracycle is doing and support them COMPLETELY. I will continue to work with them in the future. That said, I feel like the expense to recycle with them is hefty and it will limit participation. I had a bunch of clothing/fabric that was too ragged to donate but I didn't want to just throw it away. I ordered their smallest fabric recycling boxes for $100 and could barely fit everything I wanted to send. I know recycling is an expensive endeavor and I'm sure Terracycle is doing everything they can to keep costs down. I would just really like to see less expensive options for everyday people like me who want to do more but don't have funds. I try to encourage friends, families, coworkers, and general acquaintances to utilize Terracycle. Unfortunately, as soon as they see how expensive it is, they look at me like I'm insane for suggesting it. Me and my eco-conscious friends just can't afford to utilize most of their recycling programs. I really hope Terracycle is working on more free programs or at the very least, finding ways to make it less expensive for the people who really want to support them. All in all, I'm very happy with their customer service and ease of use.
List of things that fit in a small box; An expensive way to assuage my guilt
I bought this not because I had a lot of fabric scraps (although I did have some), but because I have a lot of stained, worn, and holey clothing that I felt bad about throwing away. I got rid of 9 bottoms and 18 tops and assorted scraps. Here is what I was able to fit into the small box, rolling the items as if I were packing a suitcase (most items were sized medium): 4 pr pants (cargo, capri, corduroy) 3 pr jeans 2 pr shorts 3 turtlenecks 7 tank tops 4 tshirts 3 short sleeved shirts 1 sweater (not very bulky) 1 pr pajamas (not bulky) long underwear
Hilda the Crafty
I have always done a lot of fiber crafts, sewing, knitting, crochet, embroidery, and all of them leave bits of thread and fabric around, usually caught in the roller brush on the vacuum cleaner. I have looked for several years for a way to recycle all those bits and scraps so I was thrilled to invite Hilda into my home. I'm sewing a jacket right now and when I'm done, I'll send a picture of the leftover scraps. Even saving larger scraps for quilt tops, you get a lot of leftovers. Thank you for providing this service.
Incredibly helpful while moving!
So I was moving out and was stressing about throwing away my clothes. This made such a difference in my life because I knew that my clothing wasn’t going to be put into a review!
Fabrics and clothing box
Perfect for those old undies that one wouldn’t want to use as rags. Also, I sew, knit and weave. The box sits proudly next to my sewing machine
